3.02 Literacy Tutoring in Action

Learning Objective
Understand how literacy tutoring works in LIA, the expectations for student participation, and the benefits for both tutors and tutees.

What Is Literacy Tutoring?

All LIA students are expected to participate in weekly literacy tutoring at their Partner Elementary School.

LIA students are paired one-on-one with elementary school students to provide literacy support while serving as positive role models and mentors.

This tutoring experience is one of the defining features of the LIA program and provides meaningful opportunities for leadership and service.

Tutors and Tutees

During tutoring sessions, LIA students serve as tutors while elementary students serve as tutees.

Tutors help younger students develop literacy skills while building positive relationships and encouraging academic growth.

These interactions help elementary students succeed while giving LIA students valuable leadership experience.

Benefits of Tutoring

Literacy tutoring benefits both the tutor and the tutee.

  • Strengthens literacy and communication skills
  • Develops leadership and mentoring abilities
  • Builds confidence and responsibility
  • Promotes bilingual and bicultural awareness
  • Creates meaningful connections between students

Tutoring supports both the Service and Personal Assets pillars of Latinos In Action.
