3.01 Service Learning and Tutoring

Learning Objective
Understand why service learning and tutoring are essential components of the LIA model and how they support student leadership development.

Service as a Core Component of LIA

Service is one of the key components of the LIA course and a hallmark of the Latinos In Action model.

LIA students develop leadership skills by serving others through literacy tutoring and community service projects.

These experiences help students become leaders while making a positive impact on their schools and communities.

Why Service Matters

Service learning allows students to apply leadership skills in real-world situations.

Through service, students develop confidence, responsibility, communication skills, and a stronger connection to their communities.

Service also reinforces two of the LIA Pillars: Service and Personal Assets.

The Connection Between Service and Leadership

One of the unique aspects of LIA is that leadership is not taught only through classroom instruction.

Students learn leadership by actively serving others and becoming role models within their schools.

Elementary tutoring is one of the primary ways students develop these leadership skills throughout the school year.

Reflection Question

How can service experiences help students develop leadership skills that cannot be learned through classroom instruction alone?
